The story begins in 1863 , with the advent of the railway in Francavilla al Mare. It was during these years that the mansion, which now houses the Claila Hotel, was built for commercial and tourism purposes. It was located in the marina district and Francavilla al Mare was transformed into a popular seaside resort. During the second world war, the whole town was raised to the ground. Only a few historical buildings were saved, including the Convent of Santa Maria del Gesù, Cenacolo dell'artista Francesco Paolo Michetti on the hills, and Palazzo Turchi (the actual Hotel Claila) on the marina. These two historical buildings were bound by the Ministry of the Architectonic Assets because of their monumental and historical character. After 50 years of neglect the Macerelli family has acquired Palazzo Turchi. They have carefully refurbished the mansion and converted it into an exclusive hotel with the inauguration on the 28 th of April 2004.
